EFI Progress Update

by Neonkoala on May.21, 2007, under News

Netkas has successfully accomplished the feat of EFI on a hackint0sh. Having now finished a working framebuffer you can now boot OSx86 using an EFI layer called DUET on your BIOS pc. This essentially emulates the Apple EFI meaning less patches and a truer OS X install. What once seemed like a dream, Updates direct from Apple, could soon be a reality.

If you're interested in helping this and developing support for more EFI modules and graphics cards then take a look at this thread and grab the files here. Remember you need a USB stick to do this!

As mentioned in the thread you will still need the patched kernel although hopefully there will soon be a version to take advantage of the EFI layer.

EFI Progress

by Neonkoala on May.18, 2007, under News

Netkas has made some significant on the EFI front. EFI is Apple's superior solution to BIOS which has not yet found its way into mainstream PCs. Until now hackint0shes have used the Darwin bootloader that is compatible with BIOS. So far he has got the following working using tianocore on a USB stick:

  • Read HFS+ partitions using hfsplus.efi
  • Patched boot.efi
  • Kernel loads and runs

Unfortunately graphics are yet to work due to a VESA problem. There is yet to be a way of setting the VESA values. You can get your hands dirty here. Be warned this is only for advanced users and is not complete.

Rumours are surfacing that the recently released 10.4.9 update to Tiger is not the final update to come rolling out of Apple's doors but instead they are already commencing beta testing of a new update. The new 10.4.10 is going to be released to address a number of issues that have arisen in the last update including sound problems experienced by many users. If this is released it will be the first time Apple have reached double figures for an update subversion breaking the long tradition of having feature complete bug free OS X by the time they reach .9.
